Shaggy's Kids

Shaggy's Anglers Camp Turns 10!

Shaggy's Kids get to experience the thrill of catching a fish at Shaggy’s Angler Camp! In partnership with USM Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, Shaggy’s created a program designed to introduce Coast Kids to the sport of fishing, which is heading into its 10th year!

This program is meant to inspire and educate kids on not only how to fish, but help them better understand and appreciate our marine life and its environment.

Shaggy's Angler Camp you will:

  • Master the basics of fishing the Gulf Coast for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, white trout, and other fish.
  • Interact with GCRL scientists in the lab and on the water to learn about fish biology and behavior.
  • Learn how weather, wind, moon, and tides affect fishing.
  • Learn to recognize good spots to fish.
  • Find out how to catch your own bait.
  • Learn about conservation and fishing regulations.
  • Go fishing on GCRL and chartered vessels.
  • Learn to clean and cook your catch.

When you step into our restaurants, you can immediately tell fishing is a passion for us,” says Ron Ladner, Shaggy’s Founder & Co-Owner. Ron and his business partner, Rimmer Covington, Jr., not only co-own Shaggy’s, they’re also longtime fishing partners. “Rimmer and I have fished the world and we want to share our experience with the younger generation,” says Ron.

Shaggy's Kids Foundation

We were amazed to discover how many Gulf Coast kids never get the opportunity to experience the excitement of catching a fish. It was this realization that inspired us to establish Shaggy’s Kids Foundation. Since its inception in 2009, Shaggy’s Kids has hosted several events that have introduced deserving boys and girls to the sport of fish.

The foundation has since evolved to incorporate a broader mission – to help children understand and appreciate the vital role our marine life plays in the Gulf Coast environment. In the last two years, we’ve donated the funds needed to send 75 Boys & Girls Club members to summer camp at the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, MS.

And in the spirit of educating our Gulf Coast kids, Shaggy’s awesome chefs have visited area high schools and Boys & Girls Clubs, giving cooking lessons to culinary students.

Shaggy’s Kids has most recently provided scholarship money to send a deserving young Gulfport resident to the 2013 program at Cafe Climb, a 7-month program that trains at-risk youth to enter the culinary field.

Shaggy’s Kids Foundation has also provided us with a vechicle for helping out those in need during the holiday season and year round. In addition to sponsoring a food drive for Thanksgiving, and collecting toys and other gifts to be donated at Christmas time, the foundation sponsored a program that provided Christmas trees (complete with decorations and lights) for families that didn’t have the means to decorate their homes for Christmas.
